Eva Kapeller-Hallama

Principal Investigator & Project Coordinator

Eva Kapeller-Hallama heads the SONIME project. Since May 2024, the project has been docked at the Department of Media Theory of the University of Applied Arts Vienna and is being carried out in cooperation with the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Vienna Museum of Science and Technology with the Österreichische Mediathek.
Eva Kapeller-Hallama worked as a filmmaker, script continuity supervisor and assistant director before studying history at the University of Vienna and in St Petersburg. From 2011 to 2014, she worked at the University of Vienna as a research assistant in the FWF project Marriages at Court. She then worked as a research assistant at the Vienna Museum of Science and Technology in the project “Collection of Oral History Interviews with Persecutees of the Nazi Regime”, as co-curator of the Audiovisual Atlas and as curator of the online exhibition 100 Years – 100 Sounds. It was primarily in these work contexts that she developed her interest in acoustic media and sound studies. For her doctoral thesis on Nazi border delousing camps, epidemic medical surveillance and figures of impurity in occupied Eastern Europe, she held a DOC scholarship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, a Marietta Blau scholarship of the OeAD and a Junior Fellowship at the IFK and completed research stays at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Institute of History at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.
She taught at the Institute of History and the Department of Gender Studies at the University of Vienna. She has been a candidate in training at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society (VPS) since September 2023.
